There Are Unidentified Flying Objects in the Sky
Science Fiction has turned into reality in a lot of ways. Some of the technological ones, in a very grim dystopian way. Except for UFOs! Which have been here, like, a lot. Sure some of the people who have seen UFO’s are quacks, but even if 50% of them are true, you’re still left with an undeniable amount of witnesses. And now, even the government has disclosed a tremendous amount of proof. Hilariously, they are now calling them “unidentified anomalous phenomena” or “UAP” which literally means the same thing as UFO’s, but the government is trying to glaze over the fact that they’ve been lying to our faces for decades (classic government move!). The aliens have been here, coming and going, for some time. There is more evidence for aliens than God. It’s not even a little bit of a stretch of the imagination anymore. Why are they checking in on us without communicating with us? Well… that is very much up for debate.
My mother happens to be a UFO witness, along with her best friend. For years, I’ve wanted to tell this story, but my mom was hesitant for a long time because she didn’t want people to think she’s crazy (but if they’ve seen her dance at a concert, they’d already know she IS crazy— crazy about dancing!). The tides have turned, however. The crazy people are now the UFO deniers. And I’m so stoked to tell her story.
The year is 1976 or 1977. Autumn. The chill air is an equal relief from the heat of the summer as it is a warning of what’s to come in the winter. The sun has already set and the calm that comes with nighttime blanketed the quiet town with an assured darkness.
Donna and Carol are best friends. They were then, they are now. They are 16 or 17 years old. Donna put on her favorite green coat, and met with her sister from another mister, Carol. Like many nights before, and many nights after, they just walked the streets of West Islip. Talking. Laughing. Ah, those carefree times with our coming of age friends.
Suddenly, they heard a sound. Like a twill, but a sound they never heard before and never did again, but it was so distinct and unique, they would never forget it.
Then, this huge craft appeared, right over their heads, hovering close, just above the telephone poles. Like in popular culture, the ship (which Donna remembers as more triangular than a disc) had a blue glowing aura around the edge of the craft and one giant light on the belly of the ship. A beam of light shone from the center of the craft, directly at them. They grabbed each other, thinking, “if you go, I go, we are in this together.” While tightly gripping each other, they yelled things like, “HOLY SHIT! WHAT IS THAT! WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON!”
Carol confessed to closing her eyes after looking up at this UFO, spotlighting them in the middle of their home town. Carol credits Donna for being, “the bravest person she’s ever known.”
In mere moments, the light went out. With complete silence, the ship rose up. Then, it quickly moved in a zigzag and disappeared, defying any known physics. It wasn’t until after it was gone they heard the noise again. Proving that this object doesn’t obviously move faster than sound, but maybe light too.
Today, both of them regret not checking the time. Neither of them have any clue if they lost time. There was no one else around them. After the incident, they continued to walk towards the stores in a strip mall where there would be some light and potential people activity. There they asked random people if they saw something weird in the sky, as it was so big, it seemed impossible that anyone would miss it. No one had. They talked to one of my mom’s brothers, Kenny (who, at that time was a Bart Simpson level mischief maker, but grew up to be a police officer), and he told them not to tell anyone because they sounded crazy.
Both Donna and Carol feel blessed they had each other for the encounter. Because without each other, witnessing something so unworldly could make you think you’re just seeing things. Carol said it was so scary, she is glad she never saw anything like it again. Donna, my Mom, always wanted another encounter. She is not afraid.
Their only regret seems to be not getting a clear idea on whether or not they lost time. Because in a lot of similar stories people did lose time. Carol says there was only one time her entire life her mother didn’t stay up and wait for her— and it was that night. She is unsure when she got home, but it was later than usual and Carol was a really good kid who didn’t stay out past curfew. She said she also remembers her whole body being beyond exhausted.
Carol said she would never do hypnotherapy to see if maybe they were abducted. My Mom says she is open to the idea. So maybe there is a part two to this story, hidden deep in my mom’s unconscious brain.
There was an uptick in UFO sightings on Long Island in the mid to late seventies. Donna and Carol are certainly not alone. I’ve been doing comedy on the road for so long, while I’m driving, I don’t even watch the road, I just look at the sky hoping to have an experience like my mother. And that’s how I ran over four people. Don’t UFO watch AND drive, people!
In all seriousness, if you have a UFO story, I believe YOU! Please share or write to me. And if you happen to be an alien reading this, pick me! Pick ME! PICK ME!
I remember the light in the center too. But it did have a blue light color are the underneath.. I think you did a wonderful job putting that story together! Great job!
Love it!
