Texture Over Taste
When it comes to food, we all have our preferences. For the most part, I have a pretty sophisticated palate. And while there’s nothing wrong with having a simple palate, I consider an adult “chicken finger kid,” as someone who is not that intelligent and/or lacks culture.
However, I do have some weird food triggers that don’t actually make sense, and they are less to do with taste and more to do with texture.
For example, I love hummus and hate chick peas. And I know they are the same thing. Literally the same thing. But chick peas… yuck! I feel like I’m chewing wax. It’s horrible.
My siblings and I all don’t like beans. Any type of bean, except soy beans/edamame. I don’t like burritos because I hate beans (I prefer a quesadilla). Lima beans, black beans, pinto beans, kidney beans— they all make me want to puke. And it’s just the texture. Not the taste.
Peaches are even stranger for me. Because if a peach is sliced, I love it. It’s delicious, sweet and satisfying. But biting into a peach? With that soft, fuzzy exterior? Awful! What in god’s creation??? Why?
Now, I love nuts. I can snack on a trail mix all day. But nuts that are in brownies or cookies? What are you even doing? When I’m biting a gooey, chocolatey heaven and then crunching on what I could only describe as a soft tooth (it’s a walnut), I want to throw the brownie on the ground and throw a tantrum like a child. It ruins the whole experience. Even with cookies, I only like nuts in them if the nuts are chopped really fine. Otherwise, keep nuts and desserts separate. They don’t belong together, I tell you!
